SLEEP DEPRIVATION

We've been offering sleep services since 2000. These services consist of Sleep Clinic, a Sleep Lab and a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) Clinic.

The Sleep Clinic is provided by physicians that specialize in sleep medicine. They provide a comprehensive evaluation and physical to evaluate clients for potential sleep problems.

Individuals that experience daytime sleepiness, night-time limb movements, inability to get to sleep or stay asleep, loud snoring, drowsiness while driving, poor sleep schedule, act in a potentially dangerous manner when asleep or experience undesirable sleepiness at inappropriate times should ask their physician for a referral to meet with one of our sleep clinic physicians.

Clinics are held at the Oscoda Health Park in Oscoda and in the Medical Arts Center located in the back of Tawas St. Joseph Hospital. The Sleep Clinic is part of our Specialty Clinics.

The Sleep Lab is a two-bed lab with state-of-the-art sleep collection and evaluation equipment.

Each room consists of a queen-size bed, a recliner, a television, a small table and chairs and a private bathroom. Rooms are handicap accessible and have oxygen available for those who may need it. The lab is on hospital premises so a physician and emergency care are always available if needed. Privacy and security are ensured for all patients who have sleep studies done.

A sleep technician closely monitors patients throughout the night or day and collects information regarding events that occur during the study. The lab is equipped for adults and children.

The lab is run by a registered sleep technician who reviews all studies and forwards them to a sleep certified physician for evaluation and diagnosis.

When a sleep study is performed, the patient’s brain waves, chin muscle tone and eye movements are monitored to tell what stage of sleep the patient is in. Respiratory movement, leg movement, heart rate and oxygen level are also monitored.

Patients spend the night in one of the two private, comfortable rooms and are monitored for any abnormal activity. A diagnosis of a sleep disorder is then made based on what is discovered in the lab along with information provided to the physician.

For patients who receive CPAP therapy, a complimentary CPAP Clinic is available to assist them with the proper use of their CPAP machine, mask, headgear, sleep apnea education and support.
